Russellville, Red Bay split bball battles

The Russellville Golden Tigers traveled to Red Bay Dec. 10 for a varsity basketball showdown, and the two schools each got a win.

GIRLS

First, the RHS girls took down the Red Bay Tigers by a final score of 41-35.

Russellville’s girls (6-6) were led by Ella Copeland’s 16 points.

The Lady Golden Tigers had a 13-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter before Red Bay battled back to even the score at 18-18 at the half. RHS outdid the home Tigers 9-5 in a low-scoring third period, in which Kaylie Lindley of Red Bay scored all of her team’s points in the quarter on the way to a game-high 25-point performance.

Following Copeland in the Russellville scoring column was Jacey Moore with 10 points. They were joined in points by Avery Watts with six, Jenna Whitfield with five, Anna Beth Oliver with three and Desiree Medina with one.

Behind Lindley, RBHS got six points from Madeline Ledbetter and two apiece from Jaycee Vinson and Amber Mason.

In other recent action, RHS went to Haleyville Dec. 6 and got the win. The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Whitfield and Oliver, each with 16 points. The Lady Golden Tigers traveled to Brewer Dec. 9 and dropped the first area game of the season; Copeland and Moore had the most RHS points with 15 each.

BOYS

In the second varsity contest of the evening at Red Bay, RBHS got the victory in the boys’ game, 68-60. Red Bay used hot shooting and an end-of-the-first-quarter three-point shot buzzer beater to build a 21-15 lead.

RBHS outscored Russellville 18-15 in the second period to take a 39-30 advantage into the half before RHS battled back with a 15-7 third. Foul trouble and a shortened bench were obstacles for the Golden Tigers down the stretch, and Red Bay made them pay with 13 made free throws in the fourth quarter.

Red Bay’s Cody Carnes led his team with 23 points. BP Blair added 16, and Holden Inman scored 14. Ethan McCoy added nine, Lawson Glover had four, and Ty Reynolds scored two.

Amir Williams of Russellville was the game’s top scorer with 26 points. KJ Murray and Bralynn Vincent added nine each. Gavin Hyde and Conner Warhurst scored six apiece. Jah Williams and EJ Jones chipped in two apiece.

In other recent action, Bryant James’ career-high 38 points were too much for Russellville to overcome in a loss to the Lions, 80-72. Seven Golden Tigers were in the scoring column, with Vincent leading RHS with 24 points.

The Golden Tigers went on the road and earned an area win at Brewer, however, 60-41. Murray led the way with 12 points.
