Belgreen Bulldogs come out on top over Phillips Bears
Both Belgreen varsity basketball teams got big area wins over Phillips Friday. The varsity boys won 65-53, and the varsity girls won 62-32.
BOYS
Austin James led the boys with a 24-point outburst. He scored six of the Bulldogs’ 13 first-quarter points. Phillips, however, grabbed an early 17-13 lead in the first quarter.
In the second quarter it was James again leading the charge, scoring 11 of Belgreen’s 19 points. The Bulldogs claimed a 32-28 halftime lead.
Belgreen continued to outpace the Bears in the third quarter, with Jonathan Mendoza leading the way, scoring six of Belgreen’s 14 points. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 46-37.
In the fourth quarter it was Braycen Johnson who stepped up to lead the Bulldogs. Johnson scored half of Belgreen’s fourth-quarter points to secure the win.
Johnson and Medoza followed James in scoring with 12 points each. Ely Mitchell added eight points, Miguel Willingham four points, Will King three points and Landon Cox two points.
GIRLS
In the varsity girls game, Dacota Green made five three pointers and scored 20 points to help Belgreen to an easy 62-32 win.
Belgreen put the game away early, leading 20-12 at the end of the first quarter and 42-22 at halftime.
Noelle Willingham followed Green with 14 points. Makenna Fisher and Carson Hovater scored nine points each. Isabella Tate and Makayla Willingham added three points each. Bryn Scott finished with two points.
