Bobcat girls claim area title

The Phil Campbell Bobcats and Danville Hawks met twice during the regular season, with two different results. Danville won the first game at Danville, but Phil Campbell won the second meeting, in a close one, at Phil Campbell.

The third time, with an area title on the line, the outcome was much different: The Bobcats dominated the Hawks from the start and ended with no doubt who had the best team.

Phil Campbell scored 52, and Danville scored 31, to decide the Class 3A Area 15 champions.

Phil Campbell jumped out to a 14-6 first quarter lead, paced by Macy Hardy, who had seven of the Bobcats’ points.

The second quarter was a duplicate of the first, with the Bobcats again outscoring the Hawks 14-6 to take a 28-12 lead.

The third quarter was almost the same as the first two, with Phil Campbell outscoring Danville 14-7 to take a 42-19 lead and put the game on ice.

Madison Branch led Phil Campbell with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The senior also hit a personal milestone, scoring her 1000th career point on a thirdquarter free throw.

Hardy followed Branch, scoring 12 points, and Hannah Welborn added 10 points. Allie Herring added six points, Layla Baker four points and Sidda Rogers two points.

In the semifinals, Phil Campbell had no problem, beating Colbert Heights 55-31.

The Bobcats jumped out to a big 17-4 lead in the first quarter and led 28-15 at halftime. Phil Campbell put the game on ice in the third quarter, outscoring Colbert Heights 22-7 to take a 50-22 lead.

Hardy led the Bobcats with 17 points, going 11-for-16 from the freethrow line. She was followed by Branch with 15 points.

Herring added nine points, Welborn eight points, Rogers three points and Mary Beth Fisher three points.

Phil Campbell hosted Clements in the subregion Monday night. Results were not available before press time.
