RHS softball gets first varsity win of season

Softball season has arrived for the Russellville Lady Golden Tigers, and the varsity team went on the road to get things going.

Russellville 8, West Morgan 1

The Lady Golden Tigers earned their first win of the season at the Hillcrest Tournament in Tuscaloosa Feb. 24 over West Morgan.

The four-inning game was all RHS, with the Lady Tigers jumping out to a 5-1 lead after one inning of play. Addison Holcomb had three RBIs and two hits, including a home run. Brooklyn Butler also drove in three runs, while Emma Campbell and Jaiden Calvert added one RBI each.

Campbell and Calvert also had two hits apiece, and they were joined in the hit column by Summer Butler, Jenna Whitfield and Brooklyn Butler.

Getting the win in the pitching circle was Brooklyn Butler. She threw 76 pitches and gave up three hits.

Haleyville 7, Russellville 1

Russellville went to Haleyville the day before to start the season, and the Lady Lions got the win after breaking a 1-1 first inning tie. HHS picked up three runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth.

Summer Butler led Russellville with three hits, including a double. She also walked and scored a run. Whitfield and Holcomb also hit safely, and Calvert had the RBI. Holcomb pitched all six innings for RHS.

Hillcrest 16, Russellville 0

Game two of the day went the way of the home team Patriots. Russellville was no-hit in the four-inning game, and the Lady Golden Tigers committed five errors in the field.

Natalie Nichols and Brooklyn Butler drew walks, and Paislee James was hit by a pitch. James did the pitching for Russellville, allowing five earned runs.

Tuscaloosa County 10, Russellville 3

Russellville finished play in the Hillcrest Tournament Feb. 25 with a loss to the Wildcats of Tuscaloosa County.

Summer Butler, Whitfield, Holcomb, Campbell, Calvert and James had hits for RHS. Campbell had two RBIs, and Holcomb added one. Holcomb got the start in the circle, and Kristin McGlaughn followed in relief.
