Chucky Mullins committee plans golf, youth sports, remembrance events
Over the course of two days this month, the Chucky Mullins Memorial Scholarship Committee will offer an array of way to honor and remember a football star who has meant so much to the Russellville community.
Chucky Mullins’ story is legend – his hardships in early life, his football career at Ole Miss, his life-changing injury, his positivity through it all. His passing at age 21 was a hard hit to many, and each year, the Chuck Mullins Class of 1988 is making sure his memory stays alive and his legacy continues to boost the next generation.
This year for the group’s fundraiser, organizers will bring back the golf tournament at Twin Pines Country Club March 24, a mainstay of the group’s efforts for several years. It will also host its third annual Football Camp for youth and second annual Special Olympics Pro Bowl March 25. Following these youth sports events, March 25 will wrap with an evening of remembrance, when community members and Ole Miss alumni will share stories of Chucky and what he means to Russellville, at the Russellville High School football stadium.
For the 12th annual golf tournament at Twin Pines Country Club March 24, three-man teams can register for $225. Lunch will be available from noon to 1 p.m., and tee time is 1 p.m. There will be cash prizes and door prizes.
The youth Football Camp March 25 is for ages 7 and older and will be held at the RHS football stadium. Check in is at noon for the 1-3 p.m. camp. Registration is $75 and includes a T-shirt, photos, lunch and camp participation. Prizes will be awarded.
For the Special Olympics Pro Bowl, for ages 7 and older, check in is at 9 a.m. at the Russellville Middle School gym for the 10-11 a.m. event. Cost is $20.
Football guests this year for the youth sporting events will include: Daniel Thomas, Auburn alum and current Jacksonville Jaguar; Sammie Coates, Auburn alum and four-year NFL veteran; Dexter McCluster, Ole Miss alum, Cotton Bowl & M Club Hall of Fame; Terrence Metcalf, Ole Miss alum and M Club Hall of Fame; Terrence Cody, Alabama alum and Super Bowl Champion; and Christion Jones, Alabama alum and two-time National Champion. Additional special guests are expected to be announced via the group’s Facebook and website.
The March 25 remembrance event, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. that evening, will will be free to attend; however, donations are always welcome.
As one additional attraction, this year’s festivities will include a silent auction on the group’s Facebook page. The auction is open now.
