Russellville baseball team logs five-game winning streak
The Russellville varsity baseball team put together a five-game winning streak after getting off to a slow start on the road to begin the season. The Golden Tigers played their first home games of the year and evened their record at 5-5 with wins over Austin and Southside-Gadsden.
Russellville 14, Austin 4
In the home opener March 7, the Golden Tigers got a run-rule win over the Black Bears of Austin in six innings.
Shortstop Brandt Cummings led RHS to victory with two hits, including a home run and a double. He drove in three runs and scored twice.
Shayden Romans added two hits and an RBI, and Banks Langston had a hit, two RBIs and two runs. Also hitting safely were Brodie Vandiver, Brayden Spurgeon and Eli Boutwell. Additional RBIs came from Spurgeon, Michael Scofield and Cayden Johns.
Spurgeon pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run. He struck out five, walked one and allowed six hits.
Russellville 9, Southside-Gadsden 3
A Saturday win over Southside evened the record on the season for RHS. The Golden Tigers had eight hits, with Logan White and Spurgeon leading the team with two each. Vandiver, Romans, Boutwell and Scofield also hit safely. Russellville doubles were by White, Vandiver, Scofield, Romans and Spurgeon. Vandiver had two RBIs as did Spurgeon.
White got the start on the mound and the win. The left-hander went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out 10 and walking one. Johns pitched the final inning.
Hazel Green 5, Russellville 1
Russellville fell to 5-6 on the season with a Saturday loss to the Trojans. All of the game’s scoring came before the fifth inning as rain moved in.
RHS got two hits from Johns, including a double, and Cummings had the RBI.
Seth Burns got the start on the mound for Russellville, with four of the five Hazel Green runs being earned. Spurgeon finished the game with scoreless relief.
