McWane Science Center presents RPL event

Water, fire, rockets and oceans were among the topics covered in the interactive event at the Russellville Public Library June 16.

Jennifer Akins Moore, of the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Ala., presented the second installment in the 2023 series of summer reading program events, all of which are based on this year’s theme “All Together Now.”

Moore talked about the importance of coming together as scientists, astronauts and oceanographers to explore and learn about how things work on the planet and how they can affect each other.

She performed hands-on demonstrations to illustrate the concepts presented, including one about rockets and how they move, to help explain Newton’s Third Law of Motion: “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

She also swung a bucket of water around to demonstrate how it’s possible for the water to stay in the bucket.

“The program was educational and a lot of fun,” said RPL library director Joshlyn Bowen. “Every child was captivated by the presenter’s engaging presentation. I love to see children having fun while learning.”

Participation in the RPL summer reading program events is free; however, registration is required, and there are no more openings at this time.
