Basketball tips off in Franklin County

Varsity basketball tipped off last week in Franklin County. With boys coming out of football, it was mostly girls basketball teams taking the floor.

In an early season matchup of rivals, Belgreen used a strong third quarter to pull away from the Phil Campbell Bobcats, winning 55-48.

Phil Campbell raced out to an eight point lead early on before Belgreen came back to cut the Bobcats lead to 15-12 at the end of the first quarter. Belgreen trimmed Phil Campbell’s lead even further in the second quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 11-10.

Belgreen had a big third quarter, outscoring Phil Campbell 23-11 to take a 46-36 lead. The Bobcats fought their way back in the fourth quarter, cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to four points, but Belgreen held on for the win.

Dacota Green led Belgreen with 14 points, followed by Bryn Scott with 11 points.

Isabella Tate added nine points, Makenna Fisher eight points, Lilliana Willingham four points, Morgan Lauderdale three points, Carson Hovater three points, Jacqueline Alban two points and Lily Green with one point.

Macy Hardy led Phil Campbell with 19 points, followed by Isabella Ashley with 10 points.

Hannah Welborn added nine points, Leela Baker six points and Sidda Rogers four points.

Belgreen 44, Tremont (MS) 38

Makenna Fisher led Belgreen passed Tremont to win 44-38.

Fisher’s 11 points led the Bulldogs as they built a 11-5 first quarter lead and led 25-21 at the half. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 37-31 at the end of the third quarter.

Lilliana Willingham added seven points, Isabella Tate six points, Jacqueline Alban four points, Dacota Green four points, Carson Hovater four points, BB Scott three points, Morgan Lauderdale three points and Lily Green three points.

Vina 63, Berry 36

The Vina Red Devils opened the season with a 63-36 win over Berry.

Vina led 20-4 after the first quarter and 35-16 at halftime.

Junior Sara Harper led the scoring with 14 points and eight assists. Sophomore Braxtyn Quinn scored 13 points, followed by junior Khylee Brooks with nine points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Lana Bell had eight and senior Mikala Mitchell had seven points. Senior Kaley Attaway had six points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Kenzie Elrod scored three, and senior Jayln Shotts added one. Freshman Layla Hester added two points and seven assists.

Vina 56, Tharptown 43

On Friday night, Vina’s varsity girls defeated cross county rival Tharptown 56-43.

The Lady Red Devils led 20-4 at the end of the first quarter and 34-15 at halftime.
Khylee Brooks led scoring with 11 points and seven rebounds, followed by Sara Harper and Layla Hester, each with 10 points. Harper had eight assists. Kaley Attaway had eight points and nine rebounds followed by Braxtyn Quinn with five points. Kenzie Elrod, Mikala Mitchell and Lana Bell each had four points.

Ashton Tharp led Tharptown with 14 points followed by Cortney Smith with 10 points.
