RHS baseball program hosts camp for kids

The Russellville High School baseball program hosted a summer camp for kids June 20-21 at the home of the Golden Tigers.

RHS head coach Jess Smith, the baseball coaching staff and current Golden Tigers instructed the 65 children, 6-12, that participated in the camp. Day one featured an afternoon session, and day two of the camp took place in the morning.

Children received a T-shirt and learned hitting, running, fielding and pitching fundamentals. They played on the game field at Russellville High School and had the opportunity to go through drills at the camp the same way as the current RHS players do during their practices and games during the season. The young sluggers also had a home run derby as they took swings from the outfield grass and hit pitched balls over the stadium fence.

“For me, it’s an opportunity to become familiar with our younger players in our community and their families,” Smith said. “They get to be around our players that they look up to and receive coaching from them and our coaching staff. Really, it’s a great way to give back to our community. These young ones look up to our older ones and we hope that we continue a long legacy of winning baseball in Russellville, and I believe that starts with things like this camp.”
