Franklin County Schools rounded out the hiring of new coaches at the most recent board meeting Aug.6.

Brady Ramey resigned as the Red Bay girls basketball coach when he was named the school’s new principal. The Tigers didn’t have to look very far to find a replacement. John Torisky, Red Bay’s varsity boys coach, will be taking on double duty by coaching the varsity girls as well.

Torisky has been very successful in resurrecting the Red Bay boys basketball program to being a regular contender for county and area titles. Now, he will see if he can bring the same success to a girls program that has struggled since his father-in-law, Donnie Roberts, stepped down several years ago.

“It will be a challenge coaching both the boys and the girls,” said Torisky, “but I like a challenge. I think we can be successful at both. I know the tradition Red Bay girls basketball has, and I think we can get back to where it needs to be.”

Talon Thomas will take over the Belgreen cross country program. Thomas, who is currently a teacher and coach at Belgreen, said he believes he can continue the Bulldogs’ success in distance racing.

“We have some competitive athletes at Belgreen,” Thomas explained. “I’m excited to get the chance to lead this program.”

Tharptown turned to a young coach in Lucas Craft to take over the Wildcat baseball program following the resignation of Thomas Horton. Craft will be a first-year teacher and coach at Tharptown, helping with football as well as leading the baseball program. Craft is a graduate of Colbert County High School where he played football and baseball.
