The Black Sox 17U travel baseball team continued its spring and summer season with games over the past two weekends. First, the team played at the Sand Mountain Park in Albertville. Next, the squad faced top competition at the LakePoint Sports Complex of Emerson, Ga., near Atlanta.

The Sox have many players on the roster representing the Russellville and Phil Campbell High School programs. The team plays weekend games in multiple locations during the travel ball season, and they are led by Coach Matt Spurgeon.

June 10-12 the Black Sox went to the new Sand Mountain Park, and the team got a win over PBA by a 16-0 final score in a three-inning contest.

Cam Habada of Phil Campbell pitched the entire game and threw a no-hitter. Habada struck out seven and walked two while throwing 53 pitches.

Phil Campbell and Russellville batters combined for 11 of the team’s 17 hits. Brayden Heaps and Casen Heaps had two hits each, with Casen picking up a triple and Brayden smacking a double. Also collecting extra-base hits were Shayden Romans with a triple and Banks Langston with a double.

Local batters with a single each were Brayden Spurgeon, Kyle Pace, Bryant Anthony, Cole Pace and Habada. Sage Raper also reached base on a walk.

Casen Heaps led the team with three RBIs. Anthony added two, and he was followed with one each from Langston, Spurgeon, Romans and Habada.

The following weekend featured games versus multiple opponents at LakePoint. June 17, the Black Sox defeated Nelson Baseball by a 5-3 score.

Russellville pitchers Logan White and Spurgeon combined forces to get the seven-inning victory. White got the start and went six innings for the win. The left-hander threw 96 pitches and allowed two runs. He gave up six hits, struck out seven and walked two. Spurgeon worked the game’s final frame for the save.

Anthony and Habada had two hits apiece to lead the Black Sox. One of Anthony’s hits was a double.

Romans and Casen Heaps also hit safely, adding one single each. Anthony drove in three runs for the Sox, while Brayden Heaps and Romans had one RBI apiece.

Kyle Pace walked and scored a run for the Black Sox. Anthony, Romans and Habada also drew walks to help the cause, and Romans was credited with a stolen base.
