This past week the Phil Campbell City Council unanimously voted in favor of approving a donation for $2,100 to pay the balance owed on new uniforms for the Phil Campbell High School marching band.

The request came from Band Booster President Tonia St. John, who spoke at the meeting.

“I’ve been the president since 2018, and we’ve been raising money since 2017 for these uniforms,” explained St. John. “We’ve done multiple fundraisers, received private donations, and band parents have worked endless hours. We ask for your help.”

Three band student leaders also attended the meeting – Lucas St. John, Tucker King and Landon Mather.

“It will be a positive thing for the kids and for our community,” added Tonia St. John. “We’re coming off a perfect season.”

In other business, the council:

• Approved $150 for a sign at the football field.
• Approved advertising for a full-time sanitation worker.
• Announced one bid has been received for Ball Park Road paving/chip seal. Council members decided to try to get another bid and table the matter of awarding a bid until the next meeting.
• Approved Elizabeth Street variation for rear yard to 40 feet from 50 feet, as stated in R1 Zone. The council reported the zoning board had already met on this matter. The approval will allow a resident to start pouring concrete for her new house.

The next regular meeting of the Phil Campbell City Council will be Aug. 16 at Phil Campbell City Hall, with the work session starting at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting directly after.
