DECATUR Thomas W. Carson, director of bands at East Central Community College, has been selected the college's Arts and Humanities "Teacher of the Year."
As the award recipient, Carson will receive a stipend from the Mississippi Humanities Council. He will also present a lecture, "Three Chords and One Guitar: Music History According to Me," during a program Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Vickers Fine Arts Center.
Carson will be joined onstage by ECCC students Braden Land of Corinth; Kirk Misso and Joshua Black, both Neshoba Central High School students; Andy Murphy of Southeast Lauderdale High School; and his eldest son, Chris Carson of Decatur.
Carson has led the college's band program for 20 years. He is president of the Mississippi Junior and Community College Band Directors Association.
He is a graduate of Forrest-Sherman High School in Naples, Italy; ECCC; and Delta State University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in music education.
Carson and his wife, Brenda, who is the college's financial aid director, have three children, Chris, Jennifer and Jeremy.
