Northwest, Kate Griffin win tourneys
The Northwest girls and Kate Griffin boys recently won junior high tournaments at Northeast. In the first round of the girls tournament, Northeast defeated Quitman 45-17 and Northwest beat Kate Griffin 26-18. In the final, Northwest got a 44-16 victory over Northest.
In the first round of the boys tournament, Northeast slipped by Quitman 37-33 and Kate Griffin beat Northwest 53-31. In the boys final, Kate Griffin knocked off Northeast 42-38.

Rush and Powell team up for baseball
Rush Foundation Hospital and Jay Powell have teamed up for baseball action in the 8th Annual Jay Powell Baseball Clinic
The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 at West Lauderdale High School. All proceeds will benefit Hope Village for Children. The event is sponsored by Rush Foundation Hospital and Rush Sports Medicine.
Powell led the Florida Marlins in their victory against the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 World Series. Currently, he pitches for the Texas Rangers. He will teach all participants the important aspects of baseball such as hitting, pitching, and fielding. A native of Collinsville, Powell attended and played baseball at West Lauderdale High School and Mississippi State University.
Special guests that have attended the camp with Powell in previous years include: Jeremy Jackson of the New York Mets, Paul Phillips of the Kansas City Royals, Jamie Brown of the Cleveland Indians, Jason Smith of the Chicago Cubs and Barry Wesson of the Houston Astros. This year's special guests will be announced at a later date.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 and camp hours are from 9 a.m. 2 p.m. The registration fee of $35 includes a camp t-shirt and lunch. Indoor facilities will be available in case of rain. All athletes are encouraged to bring their tennis shoes for indoor facilities.

Newton Academy beats Sylva Bay
Newton Academy slipped past Sylva Bay Academy 39-32 on Saturday night.
The win moves NCA to 5-12 on the season.
Andi Chesney led NCA with a game high 23 points. Casey McMcMahan added eight points.
Sylva Bay was paced by Amber Carlisle with 12 points. Jessica McNeil had seven.

Kate Griffin claims Wildcat Invitational
Kate Griffin won the Ninth Grade Boys Junior High Championship game in the Junior Wildcat Invitational Tournament on Saturday at Kate Griffin.
KG defeated Wayne County 56-39.
The KG boys were Cornelius Miles with 11 points. Jacoby Davis and Anthony Brown each scored 10 points.
Powe led Wayne County with 18 points.
Kate Griffin has two games this week. They played Tupelo on Monday night and will host Noxubee County on Thursday.
In the consolation game of the Wildcat Invitational, Northwest beat Choctaw Central 54-26. Chris Leggett led Northwest with 12 points. Choctaw got 10 points from George Polk.
In the ninth grade girls championship, Wayne County defeated Newton County 49-27.
Powe led Wayne County with 20 points. Dubose paced Newton with nine.

Co-Lin takes two from East Central
Co-Lin took a 79-74 win over ECCC in the men's game and a 72-63 win in the women's game in JUCO hoops action.
East Central's Cory Hornsby had an impressive 21 points in the men's game.
The Co-Lin women's team was led by Tiania Burns with 24 points. ECCC's Nikki Lacour had 20.
East Central's men dropped to 4-7 while the women dropped to 7-4.
East Central will be in action again Thursday versus Southwest.

Wayne Academy took a 42-33 win in girl's prep hoops action Monday while Heidelberg boys took a 69-51 win.
Wayne girls improved their record to 8-6 overall.
