MCC takes third at golf tourney
FORT GAINES, Ga. The Meridian Community College golf team finished in third place at the Andrew College Invitational on Monday, with a two-round total of 309-301 610.
Darton won the tournament with a 293-292 585, and Andrew College came in second with a 291-295 586.
Matthew Shoemaker and Joel Myrick finished the tournament with 148s. Shoemaker scored a 77-71 148, and Myrick tallied a 75-73 148. Winston Powell had a 78-76 154 for the Eagles; Chap Hopkins scored a 79-81 160; and Smitty Smith had an 84-81 165.

NE Lauderdale invitational draws big field
The Northeast Lauderdale High School Cross Country Invitational held at Northeast Park on Saturday drew 388 runners.
Madison Central won the boys' 5K race with a 42, and Wayne County finished first in the girls' 4K with a 96.
Northeast Lauderdale took second in the girls' varsity race with a 112. The rest of the girls' finished in the following order: Columbus (113), Newton County (138), West Lauderdale (163), Newton (171), New Hope (176), Meridian (179), Carthage (186), Lawrence County (207), Quitman (227), Union (246) and McGee (247).
Carthage's Jasmine McKinney took first with a time of 17:09, and Lilli Sonnegruen of New Hope came in second with a 17:73.
Newton County finished second in the boys' varsity race with an 87. The rest of the boys finished as follows: Carthage (97), Neshoba Central (144), McGee (152), Northeast Lauderdale (153), Columbus (171), Meridian (182), Clarkdale (205), Newton (205), Quitman (234) and Philadelphia (267).
Madison County's Daniel Simpkins took first in the race with a time of 16:52, and Columbus' Shannon Scott finished second with an 18:42.
In the junior varsity races, Madison Central won the boys' race with a perfect score of 15, and Wayne County took the girls' race with a 17.

Union powers past Puckett
The Union High School softball team (17-8) notched a five-inning, 17-5 win over Puckett on Monday.
Madison Brantley (15-7) picked up the win, allowing nine hits over four innings of work.
Beth Crotwell powered Union's offense, hitting two doubles and a single, and Dee Cleveland and Chasity Yates recorded three singles each.
Lauren White had a triple and a single for Union, and Tiffany Thomas added a double and a single. Morgan Breeland also smacked a double in the win.
Union continues its season against Newton County on Thursday. The junior varsity game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows at 7 p.m.

EMCC falls on road to MDCC
MOORHEAD The East Mississippi Community College football team (2-3, 1-2 North) fell 34-9 to the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans last Saturday.
The Trojans jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the opening half, with an 18-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and a four-yard scoring run in the second quarter.
The Lions reduced their halftime deficit to 14-2, with a late first half sack in the end zone by EMCC's Bryan Brandy.
Bernard George scored on a 47-yard punt return for the Lions at the start of the second half to reduce the Trojans' advantage to 14-9.
MDCC went on to score 20 unanswered points, with scoring passes of 41, 25 and 17 yards.

Bush receives C-USA volleyball honor
HATTIESBURG Southern Miss senior volleyball player Andrea Bush earned Co-Conference USA Volleyball Player of the Week honors for the week ending on Oct. 5.
Bush is the second Eagles player to be selected for the weekly honor. Bridget Files was named the conference player of the week for Sept. 21.
USF's Shameka Mitchell shared the award with Bush, after both players led their teams to 2-0 league marks last weekend.
Bush tallied a league-high and career-tying 30 kills, and she hit .397 in USM's first win over Houston in program history.
