Belgreen splits with Colbert Heights

BELGREEN – The Belgreen varsity girls cruised to a 47-24 win over Class 3A Colbert Heights Monday night, while the Belgreen varsity boys committed 29 turnovers en route to a 91-54 loss to the Wildcats.
Colbert Heights won the "B" boys game 49-37 after opening the game with a 12-0 run.
The Belgreen "B" boys were led by Jared Richardson's 14 points. B.J. Horton added 11 points, including seven in the final quarter. Brandon Hester (5), Jacob Green (4) and Sam Presley (3) also scored for the Bulldogs.
In the varsity girls game, Belgreen jumped out to a 20-2 lead thanks to eight Colbert Heights turnovers and a game-high 10 points from starter Amy Smith and four first-quarter points from Keri Metcalf, who came off the bench and added a steal and an assist.
Starting guard Candice Allen drilled a 3-pointer and also had a steal and an assist in the opening quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs emptied their bench in the second quarter as Elizabeth Landers drilled three long jumpers and Anna DeVaney pulled in two rebounds and scored off a putback and short jump shot.
Loren McVicker came up with a block and a steal that led to two of Landers' six points, and she also had a putback to increase Belgreen's lead to 30-6 with 2:20 left in the second quarter.
Tiffany Parker rimmed in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put Belgreen ahead 35-10 at halftime.
Metcalf finished with eight points, while Landers, McVicker and DeVaney all had six. Tiffany Parker (3), Candice Allen (3), Deborah Billingham (2), Amber Smith (2) and Kelly Dobbs (1) also scored for Belgreen.
In the nightcap, Shane Fretwell led the Belgreen varsity boys with 24 points, including eight straight points to open the third quarter and cut the Wildcats' lead to 32-46.
But Colbert Heights responded with one of seven 3-pointers as the Wildcats answered with 22-7 run to put the game out of reach.
Kyle Warren scored 10 points for Belgreen, including nine in the first half, and Jesse Edwards and Brent Newell finished with five points apiece. Derrick Simmons (3), Cody Welch (2), Spencer Hargett (2), Taylor Hester (2) and Alex Graham (1) also scored for the Bulldogs.
