FLORENCE – After suffering its first regular-season loss since the 2006-07 season, the Russellville varsity boys basketball team wasted little time getting back in the win column as the Golden Tigers knocked off Colbert County 78-32 Monday during the opening round of the Times Daily Classic.
Russellville cruised to a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as it advanced to a second-round game against rival Muscle Shoals.
Terence Smith led all scorers with 21 points while Jermaine Bates and Nate Dunstan scored 12 points each for the Golden Tigers.
Micah McCullough also hit double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Also scoring for Russellville were Will Bostick (6), Chase Johnson (5), Nathan McAlister (4), Darrian Graham (4), Mark Davis (2) and Tucker Hammock (2).
The Muscle Shoals game was played Tuesday night, but did not conclude in time to be included in today's edition of the Franklin County Times.
The Golden Tigers defeated the Trojans 61-39 last week.
Brooks 56,
Phil Campbell 31
The Bobcats dropped their opening-round game of the Times Daily Classic as Brooks jumped out to a 28-13 halftime lead and never looked back.
Adam Mitchell led Phil Campbell with 15 points while Lawrence Butts scored eight.
Also scoring for Phil Campbell were Matt Waid (4), Jordan Benford (3) and Austin Nix (1).
With the loss, the Bobcats fell to the consolation brackett where they played Waterloo Tuesday.
Covenant Christian 57,
Tharptown 41
Jacob Parker and MacKinney Flannigan scored 12 points each for Tharptown, but it was not enough as Covenant Christian held on for a 57-41 victory.
Also scoring for Tharptown were Manny Ricardo (9), Trevor Hallmark (3), Wade Berryman (2), Tyler Cagle (2) and Drew Ergle (2).
Hatton 59,
Red Bay 36
The Tigers trailed by four points at halftime, but the Hornets used a strong offensive performance in the second half to pull away for a 59-36 win.
Hatton scored 32 points in the second half while holding Red Bay to only 15 points.
Cory Timbs scored 10 points for Red Bay while Steven Nabors added six points.
Also scoring for the Tigers were Nathan Gray (5), Cody Reynolds (4), Chase Lindsey (3), Zach Hubbard (3), Blake Brummett (2) and Andy Thorn (1).
Tharptown 79,
Covenant Christian 65
Tharptown's Hollie Hines had one of her best nights of the season Monday, scoring 35 points to lead the Lady Wildcats past Covenant Christian 79-65.
Laken Barnett added 14 points for Tharptown while Chelsea McCluskey scored 13.
McCluskey was 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.
Also scoring for Tharptown were Lauren Scott (4), Heather Hatton (4), Kendra Baker (4) and Jessica Myrick (3).
