Six RHS baseball players make AWSA All State
It was an exciting week for RHS baseball last week. The season might be over, but the action is still ongoing for Golden Tiger athletes.
Five Russellville players were named to first team All-State Honors from the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Judd Ward, Reed Smith, Cody Greenhill, Landon Oliver and Austin Kitterman from RHS were among the 16 in Class 5A receiving first team recognition. Additionally, Austin Bohannon, who Coach Chris Heaps said was “equally deserving of first team honors,” was named to the second team.
“I would say there’s not many schools in the history of baseball in Alabama to have that many (selected for All State Honors),” Heaps said.
On the diamond, the Golden Tigers played a double header against Hartselle Monday and will wrap up summer play dates next Thursday. Next week will also see RHS headed to a team camp at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The team will see action versus Hewitt-Trussville, Sparkman, Guntersville and Athens as part of the camp, Heaps said.
“We’ll have a three-day experience,” Heaps said. “That will be a good week for us.”
Yesterday, three Golden Tigers headed south to Troy for the Alabama High School Coaches Association Underclassmen Showcase: Chad Wray, Russ Carpenter and Landon Ezell. These Golden Tigers could ultimately be selected for Team Alabama.
Following next week’s Thursday game, “We need a well-deserved break,” Heaps said. A few weeks of downtime will refresh the Golden Tiger to return to practice and workouts.
