Phil Campbell wins first area volleyball title

Three years ago, not a single girl at Phil Campbell had played organized volleyball. In year one, the Bobcats didn’t win a game. In year two, the Bobcats won five games but got closer and closer to winning several others. In year three, Phil Cambpell hit the 20-win mark and won the Class 3A Area 15 tournament.

The Bobcats dominated the tournament, beating Colbert County in three-straight sets 25-13, 25-16 and 25-22. Phil Campbell turned right around and took a 2-0 lead over Colbert Heights, winning 25-13 and 25-20. The Wildcats took game three 25-23, but the Bobcats rebounded, winning game four 25-17 and the match 3-1 to take home the area title.

“These girls are resilient,” said Phil Campbell coach Julianna Taylor. “They’ve worked so hard to get to this point. It’s a blessing to coach such a great group of girls.”

Phil Campbell plays Brindlee Mountain in the Class 3A Super Regional in Huntsville Wednesday at 10:15 a.m.

“I started this program from scratch three years ago,” said Amy Moss, who co-coaches with Taylor. “We have grown each year and continued to get better. It started with a foundation of players who didn’t get a chance to experience this, but we wouldn’t be here without them and their devotion to volleyball at Phil Campbell High School. These girls have accomplished so much in such a short time and make me prouder each day.”
