SCOOBA A late recruiting start has left East Mississippi Community College head women's soccer coach Brian Bennett short-handed this fall. The Lady Lions currently have only nine players on its team.
You need 11 to play and East Mississippi is set to open its season on Aug. 31 at Gulf Coast Community College Tournament in Perkinston.
The Lady Lions had a solid 8-5-1 record last year and made the State Junior College Tournament.
East Mississippi will build its young team around freshmen midfielder Stephanie Goldsmith.
Six other starting spots have been determined. Holly Ballard will play sweeper.
Emily Gable will be the goalie. Alexa Hutchinson will be the other forward by Meggs. The fullbacks will be Lindsey Shelton and Courtney Trenaye.
That leaves the defender positions an area where Bennett is holding try outs in order to fill out his roster.
The arrival of Meridian Community College on the women's soccer scene had an effect on East Mississippi.
The Lady Lions are set to meet their new rivals at MCC on Sept. 7 in Meridian. The club's first home game will be Sept. 11 when Copiah-Lincoln visits. The team has slated 14 games for the fall.
EMCC opens against Jones at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Scooba.
