Trap team takes third at state

The 4H shooting team of Camron Burks (13, Vina), Blake Daily (12, Russellville), Jackson Mitchell (12, Russellville), Kolton Roberson (13, Cherokee) and Peyton Flanagan (12, Muscle Shoals) took third place in trap out of 25 teams at the state competition in Childersburg this weekend.

“They did great. I thought they did exceptionally well,” said Wade Willingham. Willingham, at Cedar Hill Trap, serves as instructor for the team.

These five started shooting together in February of this year. At the state competition, held at Red Eagle range and Selwood Farms shooting facilities in Childersburg, they competed in the areas of trap, skeet singles and doubles and sporting clay.

“The sporting clay was the first event of its type for them. They seemed to really enjoy the different type stations and situations in which the clays were thrown,” said Tim Burks, Camron’s father. “Some rolled across the ground to imitate the travel of a rabbit, some bounced off trampolines and others were thrown from elevated platforms at different speeds and angles.”
