Russellville shows promise at spring game

In the final assessment, Russellville football Coach Mark Heaton was overall pleased with his team’s spring football action versus Shelby County and Pelham, with a win over Shelby in the first two quarters, 30-34, and a loss to Pelham in the second two quarters, 28-14.

“It was very promising. I think if our young guys develop and mature quickly through the summer, we should be out to a fast start in the fall,” Heaton said. “We’re a lot further along offensively because we have so many coming back.”

While the challenges of youth showed on the defensive side of the ball, Heaton said his offensive line did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage in the spring game, with veterans like third-year starter Payton Nichols and standouts Raul Mojica, Austin Stidham and Devin Buckhalter really showing their skill after only seven days of practice and four days of no practice prior to the spring game.

It was, Heaton said, a “great way to start our summer.”
