Rev. George W. Jones
The Rev. George W. Jones, age 85, Phil Campbell, passed away Nov. 26. He was a loving husband, father, Papaw and friend.
George was a retired SFC in the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded numerous honors, those being Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Combat Medal with Device, National Defense Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Overseas Service Medal and Parachutist Badge. He was a member of the Bear Creek American Legion Post 51, past member of the Bear Creek Rescue Squad and Volunteer Fire Dept., retired custodian with the Marion County Schools, and a minister of the gospel for 40 years, having pastored churches in Franklin,
Marion and Winston counties. He was a member of Bear Creek # 1 Baptist Church.
His visitation will be held Nov. 28 at Pinkard Funeral Home in Haleyville from 5-8 p.m., and his funeral will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 29 at Bear Creek # 1 Baptist Church in Bear Creek. He will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. preceding the funeral. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
He is survived by his children, Gary Jones, Jean Hester, Michael and wife Jennifer Jones, David Jones, Martha and husband Chris Southern and John and wife Bridget Jones; sister, Leola Gordon; brothers, Orval Jones, J.P. and wife Mildred Jones and Walker (Johnnie) Jones; grandchildren, Hope and husband Nate Thompson, Heather Godwin, Jessica and husband Jesse Allen, Andy Jones, Bailey Jones, Emily Jones, Cole Southern, Maggie Southern and Luke Jones; great-grandchildren, Caleb Thompson, Olivia Allen, Elijah Allen, Joshua Allen and Judah Allen; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John O. and Martha A. Jones; first wife, Maggie Nina Jones, and second wife, Glynda Hampton Jones.
