Tomato sandwich day remains a hit

A steady flow of people meandered in and out of the Franklin County Farmers Market in Russellville July 27 for Tomato Sandwich Day.

“We’ve had a good, even flow of people,” Extension agent Annette Casteel said.

From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Franklin County Extension agents served up fresh tomato sandwiches with all the fixins for community members who turned out for the event. Chips and cookies were also provided, as well as watermelon slices cut on the spot, and cold beverages.

“We’ve done this on a smaller scale before, but we decided to step it up this year,” Franklin County Extension Director Katernia Cole-Coffey said.

The effort turned out big results, according to Cole-Coffey, who said more than 200 people came to enjoy the fresh offerings.

Picnic tables gave people a spot to relax in the cool morning breeze and enjoy their food as Cole-Coffey handed out information packets that contained pamphlets about the Extension system; how to keep your skin safe over the summer; coloring pages; word searches; and tomato recipes.
