County EMA director resigns, moves to Colbert

It’s a bittersweet time for Jody Hitt as he prepares to transition from Franklin County’s Emergency Management Agency director to Colbert County’s deputy EMA director.

“It’s been a rough decision. I’ve enjoyed working here,” Hitt said.

Hired as the director in 2014, Hitt said he is a Franklin County native through and through. “Franklin County has been family for me, but once you’re in the emergency management service, it’s a big family all around,” Hitt said. That family environment, Hitt said, is one reason he enjoys the field so much. He said all of the units across north Alabama create a tight group that takes care of each other.

“You get to help not only the government and the commission but also the citizens of that county. You’re able to be there in a time of need and help in the best way you can,” Hitt said.

Probate Judge and Franklin County Commission Chairman Barry Moore said Hitt has done an outstanding job as EMA director, helping the people of Franklin County.

“He has always been committed, and he will be greatly missed,” Moore said.

The Franklin County Commission was set to have a special called meeting Jan. 4 to accept Hitt’s resignation and approve advertising for the open position.
