Vina Red Devils, PC Bobcats fall
It was a tough night for the Phil Campbell Bobcats and Vina Red Devils Friday, with both teams losing non-region contests.
Phil Campbell opened the season the previous week with a 22-6 win over the Phillips Bears. Friday night, however, the Bobcats were unable to generate any offense, losing 7-0 to the Lamar County Bulldogs.
Phil Campbell generated 58 total yards of offense on the night – 51 on the ground and seven through the air. The Bobcats also turned the ball over twice.
Phil Campbell’s defense held Lamar County to seven points, but the Bulldogs dominated time of possession by atwo-to-one margin.
Phil Campbell will travel to Elkmont Friday night.
The Vina Red Devils opened their season at home Friday night against the Marion County Red Raiders. The Red Devils created several turnovers in the first half but were unable to capitalize, with Marion County eventually running away with the game 48-0.
Vina recovered the opening onside kick but could do nothing with the ball offensively.
The Red Devils recovered another Red Raider fumble on the ensuing drive but gave the ball right back to Marion County.
Marion County took a 7-0 lead and were knocking at the door of another touchdown before fumbling the ball away to Vina again. On the next play, however, the Vina running back was tackled in the endzone for a safety, giving the Red Raiders a 9-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Vina recovered another onside kick but had to punt the ball away, leading to another Marion County score. The Red Raiders led 15-0 at halftime before dominating the second half of play.
Vina will travel to Shoals Christian Friday night.
In other county action, Tharptown was scheduled to play Phillips, but the Bears had to forfeit because of COVID-19 issues. Tharptown will host Colbert County Friday night. Red Bay had an open date, and the Tigers will travel to Lexington Friday.
