Vina Coach Randy Barnes encourages his team during a timeout at Waterloo.

Vina gets first win of season

The Vina Red Devils beat the Waterloo Cougars 62-56 for their first win of the season Friday night.

“I am so proud of these guys,” said Vina Coach Randy Barnes. “They have worked so hard, and to finally get over the hump shows them hard work can pay off. Maybe this will give them confidence going forward into the second half of the season.

“It was also Vina’s first win over Waterloo in a long time.”

Vina was hot from the tipoff, outscoring Waterloo 24-16 in the first quarter. Connor Davidson scored nine points in the first quarter to help the Red Devils gain the early advantage.

The Cougars came back in the second half as the Red Devils cooled off. Waterloo outscored Vina 12-5 to cut the Red Devils’ lead to one at the half, 29-28.

Vina increased the lead to 49-43 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Davidson helped Vina hang on, scoring eight of the Red Devils’ 13 points.

Davidson ended the game with 20 points and went eight-for-10 from the free-throw line. Kasden Lawler added 15 points, Nate Stidham 14 points, Brody Washington six points, Christian Purser five points and Grayson Ridge two points.
