Readers of all ages will find a host of interesting facts about Mississippi in the new book "M is for Magnolia: A Mississippi Alphabet."
This children's pictorial is the latest addition to the popular Discover America State by State series published by Sleeping Bear Press.
But the book is not just for children. Adults also will enjoy the artwork and fun facts about Mississippi.
Did you know that the state water mammal is the bottle-nosed dolphin? That the official state toy is the teddy bear, which was named after Teddy Roosevelt? That the "Mississippi" means "great river" or "gathering of waters?"
The book is written by Michael Shoulders and illustrated by Rick Anderson.
Shoulders is a lifelong educator who has used his 30 years of classroom teaching experience to create the book. He said he wrote the book to introduce the littlest learners to Mississippi history and culture.
Shoulders' clever poems and informative text celebrate the history, locations, natural treasures and famous sons and daughters of Mississippi. Shoulders lives in Clarksville, Tenn., with his wife, Debbie, and three children.
After receiving his master's degree in art, Anderson instructed children for more than 25 years. His art has been shown and won awards in several national art shows, such as the Rocky Mountain National Juried Exhibition, Mississippi Watercolor Society Membership Juried Exhibitions and the Gum Tree Festival in Tupelo.
Anderson lives in Clinton with his wife, Merrie.
