Local drunken driving arrests were down from previous Fourth of July weekends in the Troop H District of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Countywide, the number of arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol were about the same as a non-holiday weekend and no fatalities were reported, according to Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.
Sgt. Ronnie Carter, public affairs officer for Troop H of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said today that 1,050 traffic citations were given to motorists over the holiday weekend from 6 p.m. Thursday to midnight Sunday.
He said 12 DUI arrests were made from a combination of patrols and check points.
Carter said that the highway patrol worked 32 motor vehicle accidents over the weekend that resulted in 10 injuries.
Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said slick roads due to rain prevented deputies from setting up as many sobriety check points as they wanted to over the weekend. He said no serious accidents were reported.
