While the Raiders of Lamar School and Jaguars of Wayne Academy will certainly be worried about each other when they kick off the prep football season Friday night, there is another factor that has both teams concerned.
The game is set to kick off at Lamar's Grey Cobb Field at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally on WMLV 106.9 FM
Lamar will also be battling other emotions when they take the field on Friday night. It will be the first game the Raiders have played since a tragic wreck claimed the life of lineman Drew Denney in the spring.
The Raiders will play one player short on their first defensive play on Friday in honor of Denney.
There have been many good games between the two teams over the years and last year's game was no exception.
The Raiders jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the last year's matchup. Wayne Academy came back with a safety and a touchdown to make the score 14-8 and forced Lamar into a third and long situation on the next series.
Lamar came through with a big play and eventual drove down the field to score and secure the 21-8 win.
The Raiders only lost three players off last year's team and will try to use experience and a wide-open attack against the Jaguars.
The Jaguars lost 13 players off last year's team, but have quarterback Garet James back along with Patton Stanley in the backfield. Wayne will try to use speed to get past the Raiders.
It should be a wide open ball game with a lot of speed and should be well-attended since it is one of only a few area games.
