Lady Statesmen win one of two in Florida tourney

PENSACOLA, Fla. The Delta State University softball team (10-17) split their first two games at the West Florida Spring Fling, falling to Missouri Southern State (17-4) 6-1 and defeating Bryant College 8-0 in six innings.
The Lady Statesmen pounded out eight runs on 11 hits, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. DSU extended its lead to 6-0 in the fourth when Brenna Brooks (Baton Rouge, La.) double scored Teresa Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Tara Beausoliel (Greenville). Meggan Lee (Collierville, Tenn.) had a double and an RBI.
Junior Nicki Genre (Baton Rouge, La.) went the distance on the mound, scattering four hits, striking out two, and allowed no walks. Joy Long (Oxford, Fla.) led the offensive onslaught going two-for-three with a run scored and a run batted in. Beausoliel went two-for-two and scored once. Brooks doubled, scored once, and had two RBI.
Earlier in the day, Delta State fell 6-1 to Missouri Southern State. Casey Bourgoyne (Walker, La.) erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the third inning, hitting a homerun to tie the game.
Missouri Southern State added three runs in the sixth, and two in the seventh to pick up the win.
Chrissa Hughes (Walker, La.) gave up four runs on five hits, striking out four. Lee closed out the game allowing one hit and two runs in the seventh inning. Bourgoyne and Tiffany Philips each went one-for-three.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action tonight at 8 p.m. to face Mars Hill.
