Lady Bulldogs improve to 4-0

BELGREEN – Eleven different players scored for Belgreen as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 4-0 this season with a 69-39 victory over 2A Phil Campbell Friday night.
Belgreen, the defending Class 1A, Region 15 champion, led only 17-13 after the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs used a 24-4 run in the first six minutes of the second period to lead 42-17. During the run, Martha Billingham scored six points on a baseline drive and two jumpers, Anna DeVaney converted a short field goal and putback and Amber Smith drained an open 3-pointer.
Phil Campbell (2-2) closed the halftime gap to 45-22 at halftime with a 5-3 run to end the quarter as Whitley Yocum found Ashley Jones in the lane for a jumper and Shannon Gasaway knocked down a trey from the wing to answer a 3-pointer from Belgreen's Deborah Billingham, who finished with a game-high 12 points.
Belgreen built a 31-point lead with 10-4 run to open the third quarter despite two pull-up jumpers from Yocum as the Lady Bulldogs used double and triple teams to contain Phil Campbell leading scorer Caitlin Stancil, who was limited to nine points.
Martha Billingham and Loren McVicker each scored 11 points, while Smith added nine and Amber DeVaney had eight. Katy Britton (7), Brittany Simmons (3), Elizabeth Landers (2), Katelin Barber (2), Sara McMahan (2) and Lydia DeVaney (2) also scored for Belgreen.
Landers and Baber added two steals apiece, and Kristi O'Dell had a block.
Yocum finished with a team-high 10 points for Phil Campbell, while Jessica Taylor added seven and Ashley Edgar and Tatum Benford each had four. Gasaway (3) and Jones (2) also scored for the Lady Bobcats.
Belgreen, which has already earned area wins over Tharptown and Vina, will play at Phillips Tuesday in an area showdown, while Phil Campbell will play at Hackleburg Monday in a non-area game at 3:30 p.m. and then open its area schedule at Cherokee Tuesday with a 4 p.m. tip-off.
