Here are The Meridian Star's players of the week in football and softball for high school teams in Lauderdale County.
Football
Meridian High – Sophomore running back Cordae Campbell rushed for over 120 yards in Friday night's win. He also had two touchdowns that were called back. "He's very athletic," said head coach Bill Sartin. "He runs hard."
Northeast Lauderdale – Senior quarterback Steven Dyess scored twice while also playing an unfamiliar position on defense. "He played cornerback where he's never played and he shut them down," said head coach Andy Stevens.
Southeast Lauderdale – Senior quarterback Ben Reed racked up 274 yards of total offense Friday night including a 75 yard punt return for a touchdown. "He's the leader out there," said head coach Dwane Taylor. "He's the one who gets the other guys going."
Clarkdale – Junior running back Larry Lewis scored an impressive 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown ending up with 119 yards of total offense. He also played a big part on defense for the Dogs.
West Lauderdale – Senior place kicker Will Mosely hit three field goals Friday night along with four extra points. His longest field goal was 46 yards. "He kicked the ball well," said head coach Stan McCain.
Lamar – Cameron Coleman is the player of the week for Lamar. Coleman set up a touchdown with a 74-yard run and was the Raiders' leading rusher against Heidelberg Academy in Saturday's game.
Softball
Meridian High – Senior shortstop Erin Hodgins went 3-4 in Meridian's 14-5 victory over Pearl while playing solid defense. "Our Wildcat leader, Hodgins had a very good game," said head coach Thad George.
Northeast Lauderdale – Junior second baseman Lauren Webb is currently hitting .750 while leading the teams in doubles. She has had only one error the whole season. "She hustles everywhere she goes," said head coach Chris Harper. "She's a leader by example."
Southeast Lauderdale – Junior LeAnn Workman plays a solid left field for the Tigers. She is 6-11 at the plate for the week. "She won our hustle award last year," said head coach Ryan Miller. "She plays hard."
West Lauderdale – Ninth grade catcher Emily Jo Havard is 10-15 at the plate this week for the Knights. "She's been our best hitter this week," said head coach Jerry Boatner.
Clarkdale – Pitcher Emily Howard led the Bulldogs on the mound to a 10-0 shutout over Taylorsville Tuesday night. She came extremely close to a no hitter with the Tartars only getting one hit.
