The game for all the marbles for the Lamar School Raiders is set for Friday night at Grey Cobb Field.
The Manchester Mavericks come to Meridian to battle Lamar for the Division 3-AAA championship. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Even though Lamar currently leads District 3-AAA by a full-game and can finish no worse than in a three-way tie with Central Hinds and Manchester, the Raiders could be in trouble on the tie-breaker.
That's if the game becomes a shoot-out. Judging by both teams' season numbers, there's the problem.
Lamar has allowed 25.5 points per game this season. They gave up 32 points to Central Hinds in the dramatic 33-32 overtime victory back on Sept. 21 at Grey Cobb Field.
The Mississippi Private School Association determines its tie-breakers based on points allowed, not net points like in the public school association.
If the Mavericks were to pull out a close win by scoring more than 14 points, say a 16-14 win, then Lamar is knocked out of both playoff spots.
A district title would be a tremendous springboard for the Raider football program.
