CLINTON With their championship dreams dashed on a soggy Robinson-Hale Stadium, the Wayne Academy Jaguars will have to console themselves with a state runner-up trophy and an 11-win season for 2001.
Fans, players, cheerleaders and administrators voiced their disappointment in the 14-7 loss to Trinity Episcopal but at the same time were grateful for the accomplishments and joy the Jaguars brought in their drive to Clinton here on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Tynes' son Scott was another Jaguar fan looking for his team to pull out a title.
Cheerleader Erin Wood was hoping her older brother Steven Wood and boyfriend Cory Cochran could pull off a third state title in four years.
For center Derrick King, not only did he have to battle Trinity's sturdy defensive linemen, but the
muddy Robinson-Hale turf.
Cochran, who was an offensive catalyst for the
Jaguars, agreed.
The Jaguars also had difficulty corralling Ridley and his fullback in Kayne Troutman. The pair combined for 171 yards rushing.
Ridley was glad to see his former camp roommate in Cochran perform well in a state title game.
