DEKALB Kemper County businessman Billy Brown sees his gift of a building for a community-wide senior citizens center as something he may one day need.
Brown, 53, deeded the old Sunflower grocery store building, located across from the courthouse square, to the Kemper County Economic Development Authority on Wednesday. The building, valued at $95,000, will be used for a Senior Citizens Center, according to EDA executive director Mike McGrevey.
Brown, owner of Kemper Parts and Brown's Equipment, purchased the downtown building in 1996 but never used it.
McGrevey said a committee will be formed in January to come up with designs and plans for the senior citizens center. With the help of grants and gifts, he hopes the center will be opened within six months.
