Baseball, softball closing in

The official opening for high school baseball in East Mississippi will be the weekend of Feb. 15-16.
Among the first events of the new season will be the Meridian High School Invitational Tournament, which features all of the counties five public schools, plus Neshoba Central.
Six baseball and four softball schedules have been sent in to The Meridian Star so far.
Baseball schedules received are from West Lauderdale, Northeast Lauderdale, Quitman, Lake, Newton County, Lamar and Enterprise, while softball schedules have been received from Lamar, Enterprise, Northeast Lauderdale and Newton County.

Soccer schedule changes made
The soccer match between the boys of Northeast Lauderdale High School and Lamar School set for 2 p.m. Saturday will be played at NEL instead of the Northeast Complex as previously reported.
In another soccer schedule change, West Lauderdale's match with Philadelphia, which was scheduled for Thursday, has been moved to Saturday at 11 a.m.
The match between Southeast Lauderdale and West Lauderdale that was scheduled for Tuesday has been cancelled.
Today's matches between Clarkdale and host Newton County are significant on both the boys and girls sides of the ledger.
The Bulldogs of Clarkdale are trying to secure a boys playoff spot, while the winner of the girls side will also have a playoff edge.
