Lauderdale County Tax Assessor Jimmy Slay said Tuesday that notices will be mailed by week's end informing property owners of new "true values" of real property under a state-mandated reappraisal.
In a process that has been on-going for almost two years, the tax assessor's office has the responsibility of assigning "true value" to real property in Lauderdale County, Slay said, noting that the tax assessor can neither raise nor lower taxes.
Slay encouraged property owners to read the notices carefully.
Persons over 65 years of age, or who are 100 percent disabled and have applied for the special exemption, and whose true value" of real property is $75,000 or less, will owe no taxes.
In October, the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors, Meridian City Council, Marion Board of Aldermen and county and city school boards will set the millage rate. "That is what will determine what your taxes will be," Slay said. "Until that time, we cannot tell you what your taxes will be."
Over the next three weeks the tax assessor's office will be seeing people by appointment only to discuss their property's value and to determine if they have justifiable cause and supporting evidence to indicate the value is incorrect, Slay said. Persons wishing an appointment after they have reviewed the reappraisal notices should call Slay's office at 482-9779.
