PRESTON Kemper County Sheriff Sam Tisdale said one man was seriously injured and one arrested Tuesday afternoon after an argument escalated into a shooting.
Tisdale said Johnny Johnson of the Preston community was shot about 3:30 p.m. at his home on Kellis Store Road. Jeffery Hampton, also of Preston, was arrested about 30 minutes later and charged with aggravated assault.
Johnson is in his late 40s or early 50s, and Hampton is in his 60s, he said.
Johnson was shot three times, Tisdale said, at least once in the stomach with a .22-caliber handgun. He was transported to Rush Foundation Hospital where he underwent surgery Tuesday night. He is in serious condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
Hampton is being held in the Kemper-Neshoba Regional Correctional Facility and is expected to make his initial court appearance today.
