Her compassion and enthusiasm for helping children toward a better life has earned Tina Dyess, executive director of Peavey House, accolades as the Meridian Junior Auxiliary's 2001 Humanitarian of the Year.
The award was presented in ceremonies today marking annual recognition by the Meridian Junior Auxiliary of a person, organization or business which makes outstanding contributions toward bettering the community.
Dyess, who is married to Bill Dyess and the mother of a son, Brian Stringer, has directed Peavey House operations since 1995. She was described as a "shining light in many childrens' lives" at the shelter for abused and neglected kids.
Dyess, the daughter of Mary and Earl Aycock of Meridian, received her bachelor's degree in social work from Mississippi State University in 1985. She was a charter member of the board of directors for Hilltop House for Girls and currently serves as a member of the MIDD Meridian board.
She is also a member of the Mississippi Association of Child Care Facilities board. In 1990, she was recognized with the Mayor's Communities Awareness Award for her work with the deaf.
