PENSACOLA, Fla. Coming off of a clean three-game sweep at the Central Arkansas Tournament this past weekend, the University of West Alabama softball team headed South for their first conference action of the season against West Florida. The Lady Tigers were never able to get the offense rolling as they fell 6-0 in game one and 7-4 in game two.
In the first game, UWF picked up two runs in the first inning, and that is all of the offense they needed behind the strong pitching of Krissy Styrna. Styrna allowed only four hits over seven innings, moving her record to 6-1.
Dianna Bethea, Zayne Smith, Fawn Murphree and Angela White had one hit apiece for the Lady Tigers in defeat. Smith (3-2) pitched six innings, allowing six runs on nine hits en route to picking up the loss for West Alabama.
In game two, the Lady Argonauts jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back. The Lady Tigers mounted a charge with one run in the third inning and three more in the sixth. However, Styrna took the mound in the sixth to nail down the win for UWF (10-3).
Carrie Moon led the West Alabama charge with a two-run triple in the sixth inning. Bethea added one hit and one RBI while teammate Terra DaCorte picked up one RBI.
DaCorte allowed seven runs on six hits in the game's first two innings en route to picking up the West Alabama loss. Keli Jo Lenz pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits for West Alabama.
The pair of losses moved UWA's record to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in GSC play.
The Lady Tigers return to action on Thursday with a conference doubleheader in Carrollton, Ga., versus the Lady Braves of West Georgia. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
