DECATUR Newton County supervisors have chosen a site in the Decatur Industrial Park for a new county jail, and rescinded $2 million in general obligation bonds issued last year to pay for the construction.
The jail as now proposed will cost more, but supervisors say the total cost should not exceed $2.5 million.
The park is located just south Decatur of Highway 15. The spot chosen is on a hill southeast of where the National Guard is building a new service center.
Supervisors plan to reissue bonds for the amount they need to build the jail.
He said he does not know how much the jail will cost to build or operate, but doesn't expect construction to exceed $2.5 million.
He said he hopes to have the final plans back from Pryor and Morrow by next month.
Last fall, the board commissioned Dr. Don Cabana, a University of Southern Mississippi criminal justice professor and former Parchman
