QUITMAN Quitman aldermen are now officially on board in the effort to create an animal shelter in Clarke County. The board voted 4-0 Tuesday to contribute $100 a month for the next five months to the effort.
Sue Sexton, who is leading the effort to establish a shelter, said she also has the support of the Clarke County Board of Supervisors and the other four towns in the county.
Quitman's share is part of a $2,250 budget for the shelter to be used over the next five months. The proposed location is across the street from the Clarke County Jail on Highway 512, and is owned by the county.
Sexton said the supervisors are considering letting her use the building, which already has a fence around it.
When it opens, the shelter will be a place where people can drop off stray dogs and cats. While Sexton said there will be no pick up service, the shelter will have traps people can use to catch the strays.
In other matters, aldermen:
Approved a request from the Quitman Lions Club for a roadblock on April 6;
Purchased three new litter receptacles to be placed on Main Street, 4-0;
Talked with a landowner about an easement on Chapman Lane to enable city crews to cross the property to work on water lines;
Discussed a flooding problem with Eva Martin, who reported that rain water from the street sometimes gets into her yard and garage. Street superintendent Billy Kemp is working on the problem.
