With four wins and a Pool B title at the New Hope Tournament Saturday, the Newton County Lady Cougars rolled to an impressive 17-0 in fast-pitch softball action.
Newton County 12, Columbus 1: The Lady Cougars dominated behind April Bufkin's five-strike out, one walk, effort. In the three-inning run-ruling, the Lady Cougars plated four runs in the first and two in the second to set the tone.
Columbus, who committed four errors, could not contain the 10-hit outburst.
Dominique Mapp paced it by going 3-for-3 with two doubles, followed by Kristal Burton's 2-for-3 double output.
Shelly Ferguson went 2-for-2.
Newton County 2, Pickens Cty. (Ala.), 0: Bufkin got another win by pitching a two-hitter and striking out four through five innings.
Kristin Chaney scored what proved to be the winning run in the third. Pickens made three errors.
Newton County 6 , Kosciusko 0: The Lady Cougars kept rolling on in the third game, as once again Bufkin handcuffed the Lady Whippets, striking out five and allowing only one hit.
Suzanne Chaney came on late to notch the save.
NCHS broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third inning with a run, before busting loose for five in the fourth.
Mapp and Ferguson each collected a pair of hits. NCHS scattered eight of them in all, while the Lady Whippets helped their opponents with two errors.
Newton County, 16, Alcorn Central 1: The Lady Bears were humiliated, as Newton County closed the day's work with a flourish. A 13-run first frame assured that.
Chaney added a win to an earlier save to run her record to 5-0. She tallied three strikeouts and only one walk. Kristin Chaney went 3-for-3, while Bufkin added a double and Jessica Sheehan a three-bagger. Betsy Clark was sucessful at the plate as well, churning out a 2-for-2 game.
NCHS will play host to Philadelphia Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Lamar 25, East Rankin 2: The Lady Raiders used a 14-hit attack, highlighted by Celia Covington's double, triple and home run to put away ERA in a slow-pitch game.
Myleia Shirley, Megan Pennington and Lizzie Williams each went 2-for-3. April Rogers, Kerri Mathis and Summer Richie combined for eight runs scored.
Lamar 18, Wayne Academy 3: Williams went 4-for-4 in a Thursday victory over the Lady Jaguars. Shirley, Covington and Rogers each banged out a trio of hits.
