The playoff hopes of four area fast-pitch softball teams are on the line today.
In the Division 5, Class 3A/2A/1A race, Clarkdale travels to Union for the second playoff berth from that division.
Newton County, 26-2, already has one berth sewn up.
Clarkdale, 25-8, and Union, 20-3 as of Tuesday, tangle at 6 p.m. at Laird Park. The winner will travel to Franklin County Monday for a best-of-three playoff series.
Meanwhile, at 5:30 p.m. today at Northeast Park, the Lady Trojans of Northeast Lauderdale face Kosciusko's Lady Whippets, who have already wrapped up that division title.
If Northeast wins, the Lady Trojans, 4-8, advance to the Class 4A state playoffs Monday at defending Class 4A state champion Terry.
If Kosciusko wins, Neshoba Central, 6-7, will finish second and travel to Terry on Monday.
Foster earns Alabama honor: Southern Choctaw's Jeremy Foster has been selected to the South squad for the North-South football game during the fifth-annual Alabama All-Stars Sports Week July 16-21.
Foster was chosen as a defensive lineman.
Gresham leads Winston past Tri-County: Winston Academy's Josh Gresham shot a 3-over par 39 to lead the Patriots to a 162-199 win over Tri-County Academy in a two-team tournament at Louisville Country Club last week.
Horton named to lead Coahoma: Former Lake High School and University of Southern Mississippi football standout Freeman Horton has been named head football coach at Coahoma Community College.
Horton, 44, comes to Coahoma from Rosa Fort High School in Tunica. He also has coaching stops at USM and Ole Miss.
Barfield named marketing director for AHSAA: Former Auburn University head football coach Doug Barfield has been named director of marketing for the Alabama High School Athletic Association. He will assume his duties in May.
Philadelphia netters even record: Philadelphia evened its tennis record at 5-5 with a 3-2 win over Kosciusko on Tuesday.
Match winners for Philadelphia were Leigh Allyn King in girls' singles, Rachel Webb and Miriam Webb in girls' doubles, and Nikki Tullos and Ed Cheatham in mixed doubles.
Can't anybody here play this game?: The baseball coach at French Camp Acacdemy must have felt like that Tuesday after the Panthers gave up 21 runs to Greenville St. Joseph in the bottom of the first inning.
The Bruins went on to a 25-2 win, getting 17 hits to go with nine FCA errors.
Greenville's coach probably felt the same way after the Hornets watched top-ranked Warren Central cross the plate 17 times in the top of the first inning of Tuesday's game in the delta.
The Vikings went on to a 19-1 win.
