Officers trade badges for waiter's apron in charity fund-raiser

For one evening only, Meridian police officers and Lauderdale County deputies will trade their badges for a waiter's apron and tray.
The transformation at Red Lobster is to raise money for Special Olympics.
Red Lobster general manager Kevin Winslett said the yearly fund-raiser netted the charity more than $1 million nationwide last year. This year is the second type fund-raising event for area law enforcement officers, who will refill drinks and bus tables for tips to donate to the charity.
Meridian police Lt. Wade Johnson said six to eight officers are expected to volunteer from 5 p.m.-9 p.m.
Winslett said customers can expect the same great service, and tips can still be given to the Red Lobster servers who will accompany the officers.
Johnson said the officers enjoy the event also.
Winslett said although patrons are welcome to stay for dinner, customers can also stop by just to give since the fund-raiser isn't designed to raise money for the restaurant, but for challenged athletes.
