FLIPPIN' FLAPJACKS Hampton Thames makes pancakes early today at the Pancake Jubilee, the Downtown Optimists Club's major fund-raiser of the year. Proceeds benefit area youth sports activities and money raised this year will also go toward a Meridian Community College scholarship and a pavilion and restrooms at Planet Playground. The day started about 4:30 a.m. today as members of the Downtown Optimists Club fired up their griddles for the annual Pancake Jubilee.
Haynes and Mark Scarbrough serve as co-chairmen of the Meridian Junior Golf program, which is supported by the pancake benefit. Tickets are $4 and pancakes will be served today until 7:30 p.m. at the Temple Theater.
The Junior Golf program is for all children age 10-12. The program runs through the month of June and is free. Haynes said the club usually has about 75 children participate. Registration for this year has not been set yet.
The young golfers play nine holes in four-man teams at Briarwood, Northwood, Lakeview and the Navy base courses.
The Optimists also send several high school age golfers to the district golf tournament each year.
Haynes said the organization will probably serve between 1,500 and 1,800 people today.
