Baseball tryout dates for the 2001 State Games of Mississippi have been announced, and are scheduled for June 16 at 10 a.m., in eight districts within the state.
The State Games of Mississippi is the state's largest amateur sportsfest for athletes of all ages.
High school students graduating in 2002 and 2003 will have an opportunity to show off their baseball skills in front of a select committee of high school baseball coaches during the tryouts. Coaches from around the state will select 20 players who will represent their district in a College World Series format tournament June 21-24 at the 10th annual State Games in Meridian.
There is no registration or cost to tryout, but a legal guardian must sign a waiver in order for a player to participate. Mississippi High School Activities Association rules apply for the competition. Tryouts are at the following locations in Mississippi:
District 1: Itawamba Community College in Fulton. Tryout Coordinator; Roger Smith of Pontotoc High School.
District 2: Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia. Tryout Coordinator; Phil Oakley of Senatobia High School.
District 3: Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorehead. Tryout Coordinator; Jack Henderson of Pillow Academy.
District 4: East Mississippi Community College in Scooba. Tryout Coordinator; John Wilson of Columbus High School.
District 5: Jones County Junior College in Ellisville. Tryout Coordinator; Vince McLemore of Meridian High School.
District 6: Hinds Community College in Raymond. Tryout Coordinator; Bill Perry of Raymond High School.
District 7: Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson. Tryout Coordinator; Ken Jackson of Parklane Academy.
District 8: Mississippi Gulf Coast College in Perkinston. Tryout Coordinator; Johnny Olsen of Pascagoula High School.
The baseball tournament is one of 27 sporting events featured in the 2001 State Games. All participants must be Mississippi residents for at least 30 days prior to the first day of competition in their sport. If they meet the requirements, Mississippi residents attending schools or serving in the military in another state are eligible. Non-Mississippi residents attending school or serving in the military in this state are also eligible.
Gold Sponsors for the 2001 State Games of Mississippi include Rush Foundation Hospital, Meridian Coca-Cola Bottling Company, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and BellSouth/Cingular Wireless.
Baseball team members who wish to participate in the 2001 State Games Opening Ceremonies and Parade of Athletes may do so at 7:30 p.m. on June 15 at Meridian's Ray Stadium.
Entry forms for each sport are available. For entry forms and information call 1-800-482-0205 or contact the State Games of Mississippi via e-mail at stgamiss@aol.com. You may also download entries forms from the State Games web site at www.stategamesofms.org.
