UBS in need of type O blood
United Blood services has issued a critical appeal for type O blood. As of Monday morning, there was no type O positive or O negative on the shelves at United Blood Services.
The high usage of type O blood by the hospitals and no blood drives being held over the Father's Day weekend has created this critical situation.
If you have type O blood and haven't donated in the past 56 days, please take time to do so.
UBS is located at 1115 25th Ave., Meridian.
Boil water notice canceled
The boil water notice that was placed into effect for customers of Central Water Association Inc.'s, Philadelphia, Kentawka and Central Well Division on June 5-6 has been canceled. Two consecutive samples have been tested and cleared by the Mississippi State Department of Health.
Ham operators hold field day
Meridian Amateur Radio operators hope to contact thousands of other hams throughout North America in the nation's largest ham radio on-air event, "Field Day," to be held Saturday and Sunday at Bonita Lakes Pavilion #2.
The 24-hour exercise starts at noon Saturday.
Licensed amateur radio operators in Lauderdale and Clarke counties, and anyone wanting to learn about this important means of emergency communications, are invited to attend. Field Day is a competition as well as a "trial run" for emergency communication skills used during disaster situations.

Silver Leaf to hold open house
Silver Leaf Manor will hold an open house Thursday from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. The event is an opportunity for the Meridian community to tour Silver Leaf and ask questions. There will be fun, food and give-away prizes, including a free night's stay at the Beau Rivage Casino located in Biloxi.

Seniors invited to public hearing
The East Central Planning and Development District/Area Agency on Aging will hold a public hearing about aging programs June 28, at 10 a.m., in the auditorium of the Newton City Hall.
The purpose of this hearing is to inform people about senior programs and services available in Clarke, Jasper, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Smith counties.
The goals and objectives for fiscal year 2002 will be discussed and an update of current activities will be presented.
Northeast VFD holds fund-raiser
The Northeast Lauderdale Volunteer Fire Department is holding a fund-raiser to help pay for equipment and improvements to the station.
A representative will call on homes and businesses in the area asking for support. Each person who participates will receive a complimentary 10×13 family portrait.
The fire department serves the central portion of Lauderdale County, north of Meridian, with 27 volunteer firefighters and three fire trucks.
Those going door-to-door asking for donations will carry proper identification and a letter from the fire department.
