Northeast and Meridian High School's boys teams continue to roll in State Games play.
The Trojans are 3-0, boasting wins over Meridian's "B" team, Walnut and Brandon, while the Cat's blew out Coffeeville on Friday after taking care of Laurel on Thursday. Both teams are playing good basketball right now and could meet in the medal games on Sunday if they continue to take care of business in their respective pools.
Northeast got a big game from Dekino Winston in the team' s first game against Walnut. Winston sizzled the nets for a game-high 22 points and led his team to a 89-32 blow-out of the Wildcats.
The Trojans second game, which was originally scheduled for a 3:45 tip-off, was put back due to Brandon arriving two hours late. NEHS didn't seem to let that affect them tough as Marcus Betts powered in 18, helping the Trojans to a 68-49 victory.
Steven Dyess followed Betts in scoring with 15, while Jamaal Martin chipped in with 12. Northeast is set to play West Lauderdale at 1:00 p.m. today at MCC.
MHS jumped all over Coffeeville early in the day on Friday, claiming a 69-24 contest. Josh Walker and Jason Windom poured it on with 14 points apiece.
All of Walker's 14 points came in the game's last six minutes and included 4-of-4 shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Walker busted all four from the left wing, right in front of the Wildcat bench.
MHS will face Wayne County at 1 p.m. today at Meridian High School in a game that should determine who advances in pool 1. The War Eagles blasted Laurel 71-54 in its early game to remain unbeaten.
In other boys action on Friday, MHS's "B" team defeated Walnut 50-24 at MCC. The Wildcats fought through a close game early to race past Walnut.
